“I want to scare you, no, I need to scare you, because not enough people realise that about 6% of our population suffers from diabetes, and that’s just the ones that have been diagnosed. It takes an average of seven years for a person to get diagnosed with diabetes for the first time and the sad fact according to the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology is that 30% of people with Type II diabetes have already developed complications by the time they are diagnosed.

The Hermanus Chamber has formed a partnership with Productivity SA to get financial relief for a number of companies in the Overstrand who qualify for the Turnaround Solutions Programme. The Western Cape Government Health, urges parents and caregivers to take special care of infants and children under the age of five during this diarrhoeal season. Diarrhoea disease is a major cause of childhood mortality in the Western Cape Province. Children under the age of 5 years and infants are particularly vulnerable to the disease. It is directly linked to poor hygiene and sanitation and most commonly caused by contaminated water and poor bottle hygiene in the preparation of formula feed.

Statistics show that one in every eight women that die in South Africa, die from complications as a result of Cancer of the Cervix. Simply translated, this indicates that if your daughter attends a party with seven other little girls, one of them may die as a result of Cancer of the Cervix. Almost 80% of cervical cancers are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). During the last few years vaccination against HPV infection has become available. Due to the high prevalence of HPV related cervical cancers in South Africa, it has been decided to make this vaccination available free of charge to all Grade 4 girls who are 9 years and older.
