Firearms storage at Accommodation Establishments
In order for owners of accommodation establishments to accept firearms and/or ammunition for safekeeping they must first and foremost have a Competency Certificate.
Secondly, they must have a register in which the firearms owner must sign the weapon in and out.
The weapon must be kept in a suitable safe which is bolted to the building structure and in a safety room to which only the designated competent person can have a key (to both the room and the safe).
Alternatively, each room can have its own suitable built-in safe and the firearms owner must be instructed on how to use it (instructions on the wall adjacent to the safe). The safe may not be left “unlocked” – then there will be no Competency Certificate required by the owner of the establishment.
Lastly, accommodation establishments can apply a “No Firearms Allowed on Premises” policy.
Please remember to consult with the Firearms License Control Officer if in doubt or if you wish to get further guidance, instruction or training.
